For some time, information was confirmed to me the existence of a rather special motorcycle: an Audi with a motor Audi 50.
This bike is a prototype and one copy was made in 1976 . Few people have had the privilege of seeing. It is stored in the depots of the plant in Ingolstadt with other exclusive vehicles and prototypes.
Autobild, a German automotive magazine, brought out the meteor shade for an article (No. 46 of 16/11/2001 ). As I discovered, amazed, some pictures of this bike undisclosed to the public. Brands like NSU, DKW part of Auto Union fabricated motorcycles. But with the demise of Auto Union to the Audi brand, no motorcycle was born under the brand with the four rings. At the time when Ferdinand Piëch worked within Audi, an Audi engineer Roland Gumpert, has revived the myth the two wheels in the brand. Piëch agreed, despite his hesitation, for the development of this prototype built around 1300 cm3 4 cylinder Audi 50. The rims were provided by Ronal, foot-wedges Yamaha, the accelerator by Bing, the gearbox by Norton. For the starter, there was no room! The designers have designed a specific body with a tank in front of the saddle and a bubble protecting speedometers and, unusual for a motorcycle of the time, engine speed. The bikes were in that place a clock. This exclusive bike was at the time. Indeed it was the biggest and most powerful. Even BMW and Honda failed to make a road. It has been designed to exceed the 200 km / h and to develop 100 bhp (BMW on its proposed R 100RS 70 hp Honda Goldwing on the first 82 hp). In these first tests in 1976, it developed 80 hp with its dual exhaust. This prototype, called ZR 02, has traveled 8000 km since its inception. In 1977 this bike was tested in every detail. However Gumpert and his team had to take care of the development of Iltis 4x4 Volkswagen for the German army and successor to the Munga. The development of AWD came first to give birth to the quattro transmission as known. This project was abandoned, unlike some brands like BMW which sells many bikes around the world, but also Opel that manufactured motorcycles in the 1930s for many years, this bike was put to oblivion and staff of Audi kept this secret. However for 3 years, the existence of this bike back to daylight. With the opening of the Museum Mobile in Ingolstadt, Audi presents its DKW and NSU bikes. But Audi does not find room for ZR 02. Too bad!Porsche enters the two-wheel segment, by designing the last engine Harley Davidson. This bike was presented to the International Two wheels Paris 2001. So why not imagine Audi launch
